MAINSTREAM MEDIA SNIPES AT CHEE, SDP

Posted on May 2, 2011 by satayclub

The New Paper claims that Dr Chee Soon Juan attempted to stage a "protest march" at an SDP rally in Sembawang, leading to a "rift" within the party

By Wayne Sim

Staff Writer

Judging from the tone and substance of its latest reports, it seems that the state-controlled Singapore press isn’t even making an effort to disguise its propagandist agenda as Polling Day draws nearer.

In yet another scurrilous attack on the opposition, The New Paper published a story saying that Singapore Democratic Party leader Chee Soon Juan attempted to “lead a protest march” at a rally in Sembawang over the weekend, and had to be restrained by his own party members.

Meanwhile, the Chinese-language Lianhe Wanbao published a cover story alleging that there was a “split” within the SDP, with the party’s new moderate faction led by Dr Ang Yong Guan opposed to the “radical” antics of Dr Chee.

The SDP has since made an announcement regarding the actual events that took place, and its account has been corroborated by many eyewitnesses who were present on the scene, including The Online Citizen’s Kirsten Han. At no point did Dr Chee attempt to stage a protest march; he showed up only after the entire rally was over, and merely smiled and waved to the crowd because loud cheers had broken up upon his arrival.

In his rally speech in Clementi one day after the alleged event took place, Dr Ang also rubbished suggestions that there was a rift or a split within the SDP, saying that Dr Chee was a “changed man” and that he had responded to feedback from the public to tone down his previously confrontational approach. Dr Chee has advocated demonstrations and even hunger strikes in the past, but such activities have been notably absent from the SDP’s election campaign this year.

The New Paper has resorted to even more blatant distortions in the past. For instance, during the 1997 general election, when Cheng San GRC was contested by a strong Workers’ Party team that included J B Jeyaretnam and Tang Liang Hong, the tabloid published a completely skewed “What Your Votes Mean” checklist on its front page, just one day before polling day. It is evident to even the least perspicacious of observers that it was a blatant attempt to smear Mr Tang and to influence voters to vote for the PAP.

Mr Tang’s WP team eventually lost Cheng San by a razor-thin margin of 4.5%, with PAP leaders Goh Chok Tong, Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong – who were not candidates in the constituency – repeatedly making use of the media to attack Mr Tang’s character.

In the meantime, a campaign has been launched on Facebook to boycott The New Paper, with a fan page called Boycott TNP The New Paper – Stop Gutter Journalism. It has garnered more than 1,200 “likes” just hours after being set up.

The latest attempts to smear the SDP come after reports that the party has been successful in tackling its “image problem”, with a renewed focus on constructive policy  debates replacing its former emphasis on civil liberties and human rights.

Less than two weeks ago, The New Paper ran a cover story suggesting that SDP candidate Vincent Wijeysingha was gay and had a “hidden” gay rights agenda, in a coordinated attack that was designed to coincide with allegations made by the PAP’s Vivian Balakrishnan. Dr Balakrishnan later dropped the issue following an uproar on the internet decrying his underhanded approach.

The PAP has used the Newspapers and Printing Presses Act to control the print media since the 1970s. Currently, only two organisations are permitted to print newspapers – MediaCorp and Singapore Press Holdings. According to a report by Reporters Without Borders, Singapore ranks 154th in the world in terms of press freedom.

Ooi Idiot Nani, look at the Youtube video recording of the so called protect march. It shows clearly that nothing of that sort happened. Most probably Singh must have been banging Sim behind the rally stage and di not see what happened.

TNP Gutter journalism same as ruling party’s control on main newspaper
    like below:

RE: Weekend Propaganda Column )Weekly) in Sunday times By MMLee’s daughterLee Wei Ling :Journalism Or Party/Family Propaganda Machinery

Famous despots and dictators used to write weekly and daily columns and articles in their countries’ mainstream publications and newspapers by themselves or by their family members or appointed ghost writers. This has been the proven case of Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Gaddafi, North Korean Leader to create stories of “awe” and selflessness and heroic exploits to boost up the populist and public view of the great leaders.
In Singapore, we see a non- journalist , Lee Wei ling given the main weekly column in our mainstream newspaper to write propaganda stories about her family, leader and party which is similar in comparison though less controversial.
But does the mainstream newspaper become a propaganda tool for anyone or specifically any leader or his family which is not in tandem and acceptable to the merits of journalism and public opinion.
Even politicans like Dr Mahatir M in Msia have his own blog with sizeable viewship and support from various groups and fanclub within his country. So does many politicians and their family members who are trying to tell their views and share stories about their families and ideas/beliefs via social media, blogs in current times.
This would be “not a given” as whether people flock tor ead these articles depend on whether these views and stories are likeable, no bias, self serving or least function with a simple literary merit in them to compel or attract any reasonable reader to read them. But the reality of social media/blogs is that only if people take or accept these views and stories /updates seriously your viewership or readership goes up and more people would read or forward to their friends and family.
But having a mainstream section within the weekly main newspaper on a weekend as a given highlights desperation and clear manipulation of the mainstream news media by a selected individual inoder to force or ” influence” people similar to the various despots and negative examples in history as nobody gave that previlege based on popularity demand or journalistic merit for this person to write such articles weekly.
Even a current very fast growing political newbie with increasing facebook likes and increasing popularity, viewed as one of the fastest growing and influential Gen Y and youth Ms Nicole Seah was not given a column in the mainstream newspaper to share views or articles whereas in all developed or even developing countries ; any intelligent or newsworthy and journalistic organisation would have offered that platform to someone who is liked and whose views matters.
And not by someone riding on a political name, family ties or connections to warrant an important journalisitic space in our mainstream paper.
This is ” Gutter Journalism” or opportunistic manipulation by someone for own propaganda which is not accepted by the public and new readers.
Ask the party to start he own blog or social media page for a start to share her views and propaganda stories and see if anyone comes to read them as a real world evaluation assessment tool than misusing the main newspapers as a given.
    then we rest our case.

MSIA’s REPEAT TSUNAMI ELECTIONS RESULTS NOW IN SG GE2011

In the weeks leading to the Malaysian General Election 2008, public
dissatisfaction and anger against the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition
reached a feverish state in Malaysian chatrooms and blogs.

While the internet was abuzz with the corruption scandals which plagued the
Malaysian government, the Malaysian media continued to paint a rosy picture
on the ground to create a ‘feel good’ factor among the populace, ignoring
    the prevailing sentiment in cyberspace.

Famous Malaysian blogger Raja Petra Kamarrudin made a bold prediction on his
blog Malaysia Today that the opposition will win at least four Malaysian
states and deny the Barisan its two-third majority in parliament. His
prediction was laughed off by many as Barisan under then Prime Minister
Abdullah Badawi who won a landslide victory in the preceding general
    election in 2004.

When the political tsunami finally hit Malaysia on 8th March 2008, Badawi
was so shell-shocked that he did not know what hit him. One of his first
public statements after the election was: “I think we underestimate the
influence of the New Media and was made to pay a heavy price for it.”

The situation in Singapore right now is exactly the same as in Malaysia in
2008 though the issues are different. The cyberspace is swarmed by anti-PAP
views and comments which are hardly reported in the mainstream media. PAP
leaders continue to pay lip service to Singaporeans instead of addressing
    their genuine concerns.

So will Malaysia’s political tsunami hit the shores of Singapore on 7th May?
    Yes and No.

The coming general election will be a pivotal moment in the history of
Singapore. There is widespread unhappiness with the PAP government’s
policies such as its economic, immigration and labor policies. The
opposition is also fielding its strongest slate of candidates to contest in
all the constituencies for the first time since Singapore’s independence.

Compared to 2006, the ground has clearly shifted in favor of the opposition.

    SG GE2011: Same Situation
Same mainstream denial, and feel good stories while social and alternative media buzzing with
negative feedback fm pple, ruling in self denial, still old tatics, nothing chgd while the voters’ mindsets have
    - Gd opposition, better coordination, more detailed manifesto and key topics affecting pple.
    - New media and channels
    - DDOS and other attacks on alternative and opposition media
    - growing intelligent supporters
    - Ground ripe for chg or start of change.

RE:The Prostituted Stand Of Our Main Stream News Media & local Journalism Which includes ST,Today, TNP, CNA And all chinese/malay news.

Sad to say but our journalist have been left to “prostitute” their journalistic service for the ruling party without a backbone, self pride, decency and even a simple ounce of initiative or thought just to please their ruling masters.
The continued fabrication of news stories, ghsot writer written forum articles in praise of ruling party and in full criticism of opposition, blank cheque weekly family propoganda articles by MM Lee’s daughter on Sunday times main paper, full 90% coverage and politicking for the ruling party as PAP main paper shows signs of disaster and self denial as witnessed by the mainstream news media of the govt in Msai before the Political Tsunami results of YR2008. The same tell signs of denial and rosy , imaginative pro party stories spinned and covered by mainstream media until election date despite true anti PAP ground sentiments everywhere in social media, alternative blogs/media, attendance of major opposition rallies everywhere in Singapore.
The result nobody cannot stop the reality and final results of a major Tsunami results for GE2011 this year. The biggest casualty will be the mainstream news media which is biased and PAP driven.
Your answer will come in the form of dropping readership, viewship of your bias news media programmes, the rejection of your bias and “lying” journalists like Melvin Singh, Dominic Nathan and Bryna Sim of TNP who are disgrace to journalism. This includes censure and rejection of your status as journalists by your peers within the journalistic community of the world as we would expose you for who and what you are.
Last the reality check will be the rise of new news media and alternative models with gd biz models and successful increase in their readership, subscription and viewship. More will emerge which would displace your bias news media slowly as seen im msia where the major online news media of the non government organisations and neutral org rule the readership and viewship ratings.
Your decline as journalists and your “bias” crap platforms as news will be your rewards for your “journalistic prostitution”

Shame on you and looking forward to your slow demise and end of your majority control and monopoly of the news media in Singapore.

In response to all of you here. Let’s ask ourselves a serious question and think logically. Do we want a responsible press that plays an important role in nation building, helping to explain government policies to people? Or do we want an irresponsible press that is out to further their own agenda and de-stabilise the country like what we have in US, UK, Hong Kong and Taiwan? Singaporeans need to ask themselves which they prefer. There is a reason why our leaders made the decision to structure our media industry in this way. It was a long-term vision for the benefit of Singapore.

    • ivan says:
      May 3, 2011 at 2:34 pm

nani, I will ask you again not to insinuate without proof. You are saying that the press of US, UK, HK and Taiwan are irresponsible? Please check your facts. For your information, the newspapers of HK, US, UK and Taiwan ranks highly in the Reporters Without Borders Index whereas Singapore’s newspapers are ranked among the lowest, in fact comparable to that of the world’s worst authoritharian regimes. The newspapers of UK, US, HK and Taiwan print facts instead of engaging in gutter journalism to please their political masters, their editors release only the truth to the public. Even if the truth they are about to release is disturbing, the public still have the right to know. The newspapers of Singapore, as you can see for yourself, are intimidated and controlled, they print half-truths and outright lies to discredit opposition members. I can tell you for a fact that if a news editor in HK, US, UK or Taiwan prints false facts, he will not only be fired on the spot, but he will also be sued until he is completely bankrupt. Now see for yourself, which country is the one with an irresponsible press? The one whose newspapers print facts and do not engage in gutter journalism, or the one whose newspapers print half-truths and outright lies?

    • ivan says:
      May 3, 2011 at 2:51 pm

If Singapore’s press is indeed responsible, they would have made information relating to Vivian Balakrishnan’s mismanaging of the YOG available to Singaporeans. The many incidences which happened during the YOG, such as students being forced to become YOG volunteers and later being served unclean food, the poor ticketing sales and the incident where a photographer fell from a faulty platform which collapsed, were not given ample coverage. Other examples of the PAP’s mismanagement, such as the orchard road floods are also downplayed by the media. Is this what you call a responsible press?

      • Nani says:
        May 3, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Downplayed? The press gave ample coverage to the floods and the YOG. The press even gave ample coverage to Mas Selamat’s escape even though this was realistically speaking not the fault of DPM Wong. Look, even Mr Low Thia Khiang has said that the press is balanced and fair, so what are you playing at? What is your point? If an opposition leader (supposedly one who is most affected by “biased” reporting) can say that the press is fair, then who are you to state otherwise?

      • ivan says:
        May 4, 2011 at 8:00 am

The press gave coverage to the YOG? Then why didn’t the press grill Balakrishnan over the food poisoning cases? Why didn’t the press grill Yacob Ibrahim fully over the floods? The information that the press released is only the tip of the iceberg. A responsible press is one which makes information available to the public elaborated and in full. Why not you take a look at the full picture about our press in their past and present, can you say that our press is a truly responsible one?

Unfortunately for you guys, Nani is 100% correct!! CSJ has himself to blame. Even if he DID NOT actually lead a protest march, you can’t blame people for thinking that it was his intention to do so. He has been guilty of antics like hunger strikes and public protests in the past. In the 2001 elections he constantly led protest marches after rallies. Even his own party members AYG and TJS admitted that he had an “image problem” and Singaporeans simply can’t relate to his bullshit! CSJ is setting a bad example for Singaporeans, and 99.9% of us don’t believe in hooligan style politics!

SDP stands for Street Demonstration Party!!
    Vote them OUT!

    • ivan says:
      May 3, 2011 at 6:38 am

@Not my SDP, Singaporeans can’t relate to his bullshit? Really? Well the last time I checked, the SDP is an increasingly popular opposition party. Their website, according to Alexa, has the highest readership rate among all opposition party websites. During the SDP election rallies, supporters and audiences are so numerous that they spill out of the stadium. The enthusiasm expressed by PAP supporters at PAP rallies pales pathetically when compared to the enthusiasm expressed by SDP supporters at SDP rallies. This shows that many Singaporeans have forgiven Dr Chee for his past image. The image of SDP that I know happens to be a very different picture compared to the one that you paint. In my opinion, the SDP is a Constructive, Competent and Caring political party. They have the concerns of Singaporeans at their hearts. They have launched several solutions to our poblems, all the solutions can be seen in their manifesto, their Alternative Budget and their Economic Alternative Policy, all these can be read at the SDP website. The PAP ignores the SDP’s solutions, well, that’s too bad because the PAP MPs and ministers are too thick-headed to listen.

There is nothing wrong with printing fact.

But the fact remains. The mainstream media in Singapore is disappointingly biased and The New Paper is little more than a tabloid. Have you seen their football commentaries? Their so-called “best” isn’t very good to begin with and is probably on par with the media at large.

And by the way, all media companies strive to make as big a profit margin as possible. If you really want to talk about biased media, then you SHOULD know about Fox News, News Corp and a man people call Rupert Murdoch. He is no respecter of democracy and cares more for profit (which total control over the world’s media will get him) than reporting.

All the opposition supporters are just getting emotional and not using logic. Because they know that their logic is severely flawed. On the one hand, you all talk about press freedom, but when the TNP reporter Bryna Sim commented on Dr Chee’s protest march, you guys want to suppress the news. Why the double standards? You are advocating censorship of relevant news just because you don’t want people to know it? Are we living in Nazi times? Are you a a follower of Joseph Goebbels?

nani, i don’t know whether are you blind or is it you do not know how to read simple English. I have said this many times but you do not seem to get the message, so I will say again, that Dr Chee was NOT participating in a protest march. Even blind men will say that Dr Chee was signing autographs and shaking hands with his supporters. There was NO SUCH protest march during the rally as the TNP have so nonsensically described.

This is how opposition supporters behave. Just like a bunch of hooligans. Can’t even show some decency and respect to fellow human beings. You want to know why? They are following in the footsteps of their idol, Dr Chee Soon Juan, who in 2001 heckled our Prime Minister publicly like a common thug. Regardless of political affiliations, we should behave like civilized people. You never hear of PAP supporters doing such things. It’s always the opposition who are encouraging such bad eggs.

      • ivan says:
        May 3, 2011 at 6:24 am

You are basing your arguments that “opposition supporters behaves like a bunch of hooligans” simply on one single example? You do not form a judgement of an entire group merely by looking at one single example of that group. Observe the entire group as a whole. As for me, I have seen many opposition rallies as well as PAP rallies. The only difference between these two types of rallies is that the audience attending the opposition ones are much larger and more enthusiastic. Enthusiasm aside, I do not see any solid evidence that portrays opposition supporters as a whole of behaving as hooligans. As for your reference to Chee Soon Juan, please do not harp on such old issues. He have already changed and it’s almost three years since he went on a public demonstration. Your line of reasoning in accusing opposition supporters of being hooligans is very weak.

      • Nani says:
        May 3, 2011 at 7:49 am

        @Ivan:
Regarding your comments about opposition supporters. I am not basing my information on just one incident. It is not just an isolated incident. There was a report in the papers the other day that a fight broke out at the WP rally. Then now we see that opposition supporters are hurling vulgarities at Mr Lui Tuck Yew, giving him no choice but to make a police report. What about the guy who tried to set fire to Mr Seng Han Thong? There is a long list of such incidents, too many to name. Have you ever heard of PAP supporters assaulting or abusing Mr Chiam or Mr Low?

    • ivan says:
      May 3, 2011 at 5:42 am

nani, you want to know who are the followers of Josef Goebbels? They are the Singapore Press Holdings. The editors of SPH are known to print one-sided stories meant to glorify the ruling party and discredit the opposition. Nobody wants to suppress the news because every opposition supporter would also be a supporter of free media. If any opposition member do anything wrong, everyone, opposition supporters in particular, has the right to know. What we are against is “gutter journalism” where editors lampoon opposition members with false truths and outright lies.

      • Nani says:
        May 3, 2011 at 5:45 am

Kindly stop using such sweeping statements and conjectures. For your comments to be taken seriously, you need to give some concrete examples. What I can say is that LTK himself said that the press has been balanced and fair in this election. If he himself (an opposition leader) can say this, who are you to suggest otherwise?

      • Nani says:
        May 3, 2011 at 5:54 am

“Nobody wants to suppress the news because every opposition supporter would also be a supporter of free media”

Oh really? So you are saying that free media is something that the opposition champions but PAP is against? Please do not generalise in this manner. If you say that opposition supporters believe in free media, then tell me, why are you so against any mention of anti-opposition news in the media? Your intention is clearly to ensure that the media only reports pro-opposition and anti-PAP news. This is what you called a free media but in reality it is biased and one-sided. Why can’t people know the truth?

      • ivan says:
        May 3, 2011 at 5:54 am

nani, You just have to look at the way The New Paper tried to falsely portray Dr Chee as conducting a protest march when in fact, he is only shaking hands with his supporters and signing autographs. It is indeed despicable of those editors to do such a thing. As editors, it is their duty to ensure that their facts are right before printing their articles. This is the clear evidence that the the media of Singapore is not the “free and fair” type that you think it is, but is in fact intimidated and controlled by the PAP.

      • ivan says:
        May 3, 2011 at 6:00 am

nani you speak of sweeping statements, but yet you make sweeping statements about the opposition supporters. You segregate all political audiences into 2 camps – pap and opposition, then throw all bad behaviour shown to the pap to the opposition camp. On the violence thrown at the mps, whoever said they were politically motivated? In the same regard as you speak, you might as well liken the assassin of JFK to be a republican supporter as well. Please take heed that there are more than 4-5 political parties in Singapore as for today before you push people into camps you think they should belong in with your hand of judgement.

Everyone ought to do this so that their advertisers will not reach us and will either pay less or not advertise at all.

    TNP is rubbish.

The TNP is not a newspaper. Their editors have sold their souls to the PAP and are now ball licking ball carriers of the Lee family. The TNP is nothing more than a propaganda mouthpiece of the PAP.

It is not a propaganda mouthpiece. Our media simply plays a more responsible role in nation building. The newspapers of UK, US and Hong Kong are merely trying to stir trouble by reporting on stories with their own agenda. On the other hand, if you claim that you are against censorship, why do you think that the news of Dr Chee’s protest march ought to be CENSORED? Are you saying that pro-opposition news should be reported whereas any negative news should be covered up? So what if Dr Chee murders someone? They should cover it up? Please think. You are radicalised and biased beyond reason. What’s wrong with informing Singaporeans about Dr Chee’s agenda and Dr Vincent’s agenda? Don’t Singaporeans deserve to know this? Isn’t that purpose of a FREE MEDIA?

Nani, firstly, the media of Singapore is NOT free, and I did not say that news about Dr Chee’s protests should be censored. If Dr Chee is misbehaving, Singaporeans, Dr Chee’s supporters especially, have the right to know. But the thing is, the report against Dr Chee is totally false because during the rally, Dr Chee was not holding a public protest in the first place. There are thousands of eyewitnesses who saw with their own eyes that Dr Chee was merely shaking hands with his supporters and signing autographs.

The newspapers of HK, US and UK may print stuff that may print stuff seem disturbing from time to time, but at least their newspapers print facts. I can tell you one thing, if a newspaper editor in Hong Kong prints false information against someone, that editor will not only be fired on the spot, but he will be sued until he goes completely bankrupt.

The newspapers of Singapore are pathetic, now is election period and voters deserves a balanced coverage of all political parties. But what I see is that in the past few days is the PAP being given maximum coverage by the media while the opposition is only being dedicated a few columns worth of attention, and some of those information are meant to discredit the opposition instead of spreading their messages.

Oh, Nani, whoever you are, please get over your delusion that this country has freedom of press. It does not. TNP is no better than The National Enquirer, which relies on fabricating stories about celebrities’ lives, just to sell their rubbish paper.

Nani were you present at the scene or are you relying on the biased TNP.
People change but the MM is still threatening the voters.
In fact I wonder if he should be in Parliament.

The TNP is not even printing facts, but instead they are spewing half-truths and outright lies. Even blind men knows that Dr Chee have not been going on any “protest march” during the election rally. You criticise the newspapers of Hong Kong, UK and US, but do you know that their newpapers print facts unlike OUR Singapore newspapers? Dr Chee is a very brave man who deserves the respect of Singaporeans.

There is nothing wrong with reporting the facts. Anyway, we dont want our media to create chaos like it does in UK, US, Hong Kong, etc. We want a responsible media that will contribute to stability and nation building. Dr Chee has been causing trouble for 20+ years. We all remember his hunger strikes, his protests, his heckling of PM Goh. Now he is trying to do it again but his own SDP members are stopping him. We don’t want someone like this in Parliament. If SDP members are serious about changing the party’s image, they need to vote him out from his Sec-Gen post and replace him with someone proper.

Dr Chee is a brave man who deserves respect? Please don’t make me laugh. If you think he deserves respect, please tell me what he has done for Singapore. Don’t give me vague, abstract points please. List some concrete examples. I think you will have trouble listing any examples because there are none. He has been a thoroughly destructive force in Singapore, even going to the extent of shaming us overseas by spreading lies to the foreign press. I won’t be surprised if he is being backed by foreign agencies to try and subvert Singapore’s stability. He is an opportunist, political gangster and definitely not a patriot. Singaporeans can see through his wayang acts, and this is why he has been soundly defeated in every single election that he has ever taken part in.

nani, I won’t list all of Dr Chee’s contributions, bacause the list will be very exhausive. Dr Chee, for the past two years, have been canvassing the Holland-Bukit Timah, Yuhua and many other areas in Singapore where he have been spending almost every single minute of his free time engaging residents. He knows that if he is to come up with constructive feedbacks to oppose the current PAP government, he will need to engage the residents and hear their views. You just got to ask anybody who had talked to Dr Chee before and he will tell you about his humble, friendly and approachable nature which is totally contrast to the near-psycopath image that the Mainstream Media painted him out to be. He talked to the residents like human to human, unlike the PAP MPs who talked at their residents like masters to servant. Dr Chee, in collaboration with various experts as well as his own party members, have came up with many constructive alternative policies to counter the PAP policies. You just got to check yoursdp.org to see for yourself that those policies are sound and stable unlike the PAP ones which have messed up our beloved Singapore beyond recognision. The result? A success! Dr Chee today is now one of the most popular and respected opposition leaders. During the election rallies, the stadium and fields are jam packed, and the enthusiasm expressed by the audience is overwhelming. where ever Dr Chee went, he is greeted warmly. This shows that many Singaporeans have chosen to forget about Dr Chee’s past. Despite all the insults and lampooning that the PAP have inflicted on Dr Chee, he still continues doing what he is doing. He never backed out nor gave up even in the face of extreme pressure, that is why Dr Chee is a truly honourable man. He have proven himself to be the voice of downtrodden and marginalized Singaporean citizens.

Nani, i think you cannot differentiate what is right or wrong. Facts can be easily seen. Don’t just depend on local presss. Read from other source. You will soon realise that you are only hearing what PAP wants you to hear. You realise that you are only seeing what PAP wants you to see. Hope you find out the truth before 7 May 2011.
