‘WHAT HAS HE DONE TO DESERVE THIS?’

Posted on May 3, 2011 by satayclub

George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua could become the first full ministers to lose their seats if Aljunied falls to the Workers' Party

By Nigel Tan

Chief Editor

Former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has issued a strong and passionate defence of under-pressure George Yeo, declaring him a member of the PAP’s core team and suggesting he is less deserving of the boot than some other ministers. Mr Yeo, who is currently Foreign Minister, leads the incumbent PAP team in the hotly-contested ward of Aljunied, and could become the first full cabinet minister to lose an election in the post-independence era.

Mr Goh told reporters from The Straits Times that the “core team” as critical to helping set directions for Singapore after “the dust has settled” following the hustings, saying that the loss of Mr Yeo would be “of great consequence to Singapore”. He acknowledged that the ruling PAP faces a number of challenges in the months ahead, including the rising cost of living, soaring housing prices and making health care affordable for Singapore’s ageing population.

He also made a rare explicit admission that certain PAP ministers have “not delivered”, and that it might be understandable if voters decided to take them to task, but insisted that Mr Yeo had not made any mistakes.

“What mistake has he made? You can take a minister and criticise him for not delivering on perhaps housing and transport. Like Wong Kan Seng you can say he let Mas Selamat escape. But George Yeo, what has he done to deserve this?”

“He is a core member. I have run the government and I know. You need a core team,” he continued. He singled out Teo Chee Hean and Tharman Shanmugaratnam as other members of the core team, and added that it would be difficult to replace Mr Yeo as Foreign Minister in the event that he loses his seat, and that the PAP did not have a candidate in mind at the moment.

Mr Goh’s comments were the strongest hint yet that there could be factions within the PAP, with Mr Teo, Mr Shanmugaratnam and Mr Yeo all being known to be close allies of the Senior Minister. The former two were introduced to politics and had their careers fast-tracked during his reign as Prime Minister. His remarks were in stark contrast to those of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who said last week that “it would not be a disaster for the PAP” if it were to lose Aljunied.

Mr Goh has previously acknowledged that there has been a backlash against the PAP amongst the lower and middle classes, with society growing increasingly stratified as a result of a higher income gap than at any other point in Singapore’s history. According to a United Nations report, Singapore has a Gini co-efficient of 42.5, the second highest out of 38 developed nations included in the survey. The Gini co-efficient is a measure of income disparity, with a lower score indicating greater equality.

While Mr Yeo is largely thought of as a gentleman and a capable minister, his Aljunied ward has been contested by a heavyweight team from the opposition Workers’ Party, led by leader and long-serving MP Low Thia Khiang. The WP has explained that it is contesting in Aljunied because of its close proximity to its traditional stronghold of Hougang, and said that it had nothing personal against Mr Yeo. It has also said that the GRC system is to blame for the current predictament facing the voters in Aljunied.

The contest is likely to be decided by a razor-thin margin, with Mr Yeo facing a realistic possibility of losing his ward. In the past, PAP ministers have all won elections with comfortable margins, with Mr Yeo obtaining 56% of the vote against a WP team led by Sylvia Lim in 2006. Ms Lim has once again been included in the WP’s slate, alongside top corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao.

Just received this in my email:

Subject: Fw: Pensions of our ministers

Msg below is being circulated in the internet. Somehow this was not brought up as an issue in the election campaign by any of the opposition parties. If not mistaken, $9.6 billions have been put aside for this purpose and approved by Parliament then. Singaporeans seem to have poor memory and that is why the MIW have cleverly crafted this act to ensure that they and their families are well taken care of even they are being kicked out of Parliament. Hopefully the act will be repealed one day when the fat cats are ousted out.

DO MINISTERS RECEIVE 50% OF THEIR LAST-DRAWN PAY FOR LIFE?

You friend is wrong about 50%. It is actually as high as 2/3rds. The Parliamentary Pensions Act provides that “office holders” (which means “Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Speaker, Senior Minister, Minister, Senior Minister of State, Minister of State, Mayor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Parliamentary Secretary or Political Secretary”). If you closed your eyes and threw a stone in Parliament House during a Parliamentary sitting – assuming if, and it is a big if, that everyone attends (which is never the case. Parliamentary sittings are lucky if 50% of MPs attend!) you will hit at least 1 or perhaps 2 with the stone ricocheting PAP chaps entitled to pensions.

Anyhow, back to your question. The Act has a formula for payment of the amount of pension. You start with a numerator of 8 (meaning 8 years of service as office holder) and add 1 for every year of service after that. You divide this number by a fixed denominator of 27, and you stop when the number hits 2/3rds, which means that anyone who has 18 years service will hi! t maximum pension. The amount that is due to him FOR LIFE is found at section 4:

4(2) The annual amount of pension payable to an office-holding Member shall be —

    (a) in respect of every completed year of reckonable service in any office, or where he has served in
more than one office in each office, at the rate of one-twenty-seventh (1/27) of his annual salary in that
    office; and

    (b) in respect of any remaining uncompleted year of reckonable service in any office, or where he has
served in more than one office in each office, at the rate of one-three-hundred and twenty-fourth (1/324)
part of his annual salary for each completed month of reckonable service in that office.

(2A) The annual pension payable to any office-holding Member under subsection (2) shall not exceed two-thirds
of the highest annual salary of any office held by him.

    (3) Subject to sections 13 and 15, a pension granted under this section shall continue for the life of the person to
whom it is payable but shall not be payable in respect of any period during which he is again an office-holding
Member; at the end of that period the pension shall again be payable and shall be re-computed with the addition
of that period to the period of his former reckonable service as an office-holding Member.

    (4) Fo! r the purposes of subsections (2) and (2A), “annual salary”, in relation to any office, means the annual
equivalent of the highest monthly rate of salary (excluding any non-pensionable allowances) received by an
office-holding Member during any period of reckonable service as a holder of that office.

Astonishing, isn’t it that the pension is payable based on the “Highest annual salary of any office held by him” and “highest monthly rate of salary”. So, it doesn’t matter that the MP was a low ranking parliamentary secretary for 17 years, and then became a multi-million $ minister for 1 year. His pension will be based on 2/3rds of his salary as a minister, as that is his highest annual salary of any office held by him. So, it also doesn’t matter that there are occasional reductions in salary during recessions, since their pension is based on their highest annual salary.

On this basis, SM / PM / MM will get 2/3rd x $3 million for the rest of their lives. I understand that if they are eligible for pension and they are still serving, they get both salary plus pension concurrently. (see section 5).

Or did I forget to tell you that pensions are exempt from income tax? This is stated in the Income Tax Act!

It gets better. The Act says that the pension can be commutated. This means that it is paid in 1 lump sum instead of monthly payments for life. The lump sum is equivalent to 175.14 months of pension, i.e. 14.6 years of pension. It doesn’t matter that the minister asks for it because he has terminal cancer and has 3 months to live. He will get 14.6 years of pension paid to him in 1 go, and it will be tax free. If MM’s pension is base! d on 2.5 million (conservative estimate), his commutated pension is $36.5 million. Can buy a GCB with it, without any bank loan!

This is a real scandal. I was horrified when Goh Chok Tong proposed recently that ministers serve 8 years only, and new ones come in. It means that the pool of multi-million dollar pension earners will get bigger and bigger! It will add to the financial burden of future generations of Singaporeans having to pay for the pensions of people who have already been paid too much during their terms of office.

Who in the private sector is entitled to pension? And yet the ministers, etc are collecting tax free pensions on top of their world’s highest salaries. Now you know why George Yeo is fighting so hard to keep his job as minister.

Incidentally, all Admin Service officers, Sr Police & Military Officers and High Court Judges are still entitled to pensions in the same manner. No one else in the Civil Service gets pensions.

One of the most idiotic comments I have ever heard. Why should the people of Aljunied be made to bear this unfair burden just because of one party’s aim to become the next government? If the opposition wants to establish itself, it has to do it on its own, without making use of the people.

      • Nani says:
        May 5, 2011 at 10:13 am

Seems like I’m the only one getting flamed. I know why that is. It’s because I have a different view from all the losers here, and they can’t accept different view points.
Well, sadly for all of you, PAP is going to win a landslide on May 7 and your hopes and dreams of a welfare state and “robin hood” government will die. You will have to work hard and earn your keep, not just fantasise about robbing the hardworking high-earners with high taxes in order to fund free hospitals, free education, free transport and unemployment subsidies.
The majority of people in Singapore support PAP. Like everyone knows, the sentiment on the internet is not a reflection of the sentiment on the ground.

Just because you are one against the many the many are losers and you are the winner? Don’t be too overly smug sunny boy; remember someone already rubbished your BMW with his Bentley, and you haven’t learnt your lesson.

Whether the PAPayas or the Oppos are going to win by a landslide or a tsunami is yet to be seen, so don’t go counting your chickens. And since you know so intimately that sentiment in the internet does not reflect sentiment on the ground, why do you bother coming here and kowpehsibu-ing about others flaming you?

      • Nani says:
        May 5, 2011 at 1:31 pm

I have every right to come here to voice my opinion, don’t I? Just because my opinion is a minority on this website and the internet (even though it’s a majority on the ground), does that mean that I can’t voice my views? I thought we were living in a democratic society, not North Korea? You blame our media for allegedly censoring anti-PAP views, yet you want to censor my views by questioning my right to come here? Well, if the admins of Satay Club decide to ban me, please go ahead! Or if they want to delete my posts, they can go ahead! If they do that, they will be exposed as being opposition propagandists, no better than Joseph Goebbels. So don’t question my right to voice my opinions unless you are telling me that you are a follower of Dr Goebbels.

      • 'Mat says:
        May 5, 2011 at 3:01 pm

No need to go all defensive. Everybody knows that you have the right to be here unless the blog owner says no. When I asked “…why do you bother coming here…?” did I sound like I was stopping you from voicing your views, censoring your views, and questioning your right to come here?
You come here to TSC and stir up readers with your views to the extent that some start throwing shit at you and you blame them endlessly for flaming you like it was their fault!
Well, the obvious and most relevant question to you is still “Why do you bother coming here?”

However, with the same argument and rights that we have on voting and presenting our view from the majority who are not on the elite PAP bandwagon, we need to vote and put the non PAP in the government. It is this cause that we all work out aspiring to get our voice and opinion heard. Otherwise we will forever be regard as “noise” and loser by our own untouchable PAP. Vote for the OPPOSITIONS! They intimidate and control the press so as to give them all the platform they need to influence the people into complete loyalty. Differences in opinion is totally not tolerated by the PAP. The PAP are thus the ones who are worshipping Josef Goebbels.

Actually, besides toking some kok I cannot remember him having made many bad mistakes. It’s just the system that you PAPayas have cooked up, specifically the GRC system. And Georgie Boy, like you lau goh, has to live with the good as well as the bad of the monster that you smart alecs have given birth to. Many have said it before and it helps for me to repeat it here: If Georgie Boy were to stand in an SMC he would have no problem being elected. But the GRC system acts like an enormous weight on him, pulling him down with it. Too bad, but he, and all you PAPayas, have to live with it. It is after all your monster.

  12. Senior Citizen of Aljunied GRC says:
    May 4, 2011 at 11:41 am

    Why George Yeo deserves this?

Well, first he is a Catholic. Second, he is the one who proposed the Casinos in 2005/2006. In the 2006 GE that he almost lost Aljunied GRC and Lee Hsien Loong had the lowest percentage at AMK GRC. But the PAP had thought that the daft Singaporeans had given them a strong mandate. So George Yeo and Lee Hsien Loong went ahead to build the Casinos under the guise of creating 35,000 new jobs, against the advice of most Religious Leaders and from many leaders of NGOs, as well as ground feedbacks.

So, if we believe in Retribution, and also believe in God’s punishment for initiating something that George Yeo and Lee Hsien Loong knew fully well with bring moral decay and hurt many Singaporeans not only in their pockets, savings and bank accounts but also their families and their children who are the future of Singapore, then we and also George Yeo and his family should know why he deserves THIS Moment of Reckoning!.

OR: For that matter why the PAP deserves this?

Now, at the GE2011, Lee Hsien Loong and PAP are telling all of us to think of the FUTURE. What hypocrites! Can we take their words seriously? If they really care for our children’s future, why start the Casinos?

Yes, we should all think of our future and the Future of Singapore. We should also remind ourselves of what Derek Wee wrote: http://derekwee.blogspot.com/ . We should also remember what Wee Siew Kim’s (ex-MP of AMK GRC under Lee Hsien Loong) daughter Wee Shu Min said: Click here http://aaron-ng.info/blog/the-wee-shu-min-cyber-drama.html and here http://www.mrlim.com/2006/10/wee-shu-min-is-hot/ .

Our future must not be dictated by the Arrogant, Elitist, Self-Enriching and Self-Righteous PAP Ministers and their bootlickers any more. Our future must be decided by US, the Voters. We need CHANGE. We need a serious SHAKEUP!

The PAP has over the last 50 years shown to us that by itself it can never change from within the party. So, if any one thinks that the PAP can change, fat hope.

As long as the ONE OLD MAN continues to control, dominate, interfere or pull the strings of the PAP puppets, and as long as the core leaders of the PAP strongly believe in paying themselves the World’s Highest Salaries and Bonuses without giving back the World’s Highest Benefits/Care to Singaporeans, their words cannot be taken seriously. Whatever they promise must not be taken seriously.

In fact, what must be taken seriously is our vote, this coming GE 2011 on 7th May. This is the chance we all have

    1) to force back onto the PAP what they have been forcing down our throats for the past 50 years;

    2) to threaten back upon the PAP what they have been threatening us all these while (even up to this moment);

    3) to put the blame totally upon the shoulders of the PAP leaders for what they have blaming us and calling us whinners, duds and daft, and all sorts of other demeaning names.

WE MUST CHECK THE PAP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!

So, vote wisely for OUR FUTURE (not PAP’s Future) on 7th May 2011.

    • Nani says:
      May 5, 2011 at 7:40 am

You say want to “check” the PAP. Basically by saying that, you admit that PAP is the best government for Singapore. So you are just saying you want more opposition voices in Parliament. That has ALREADY been provided for under the NCMP scheme. PM Lee has changed the constitution to allow for 9 NCMPs in Parliament no matter what. Remember, these are not independents or nominated MPs. They are real MPs who have the right to ask questions and participate in real debates, and they belong to political parties, voted in by the people. Isn’t that enough? So why do you need to rock the boat and risk losing a tried and tested PAP MP? By voting for a PAP MP, you will in fact have two people to serve you. One MP and one NCMP to provide the “check” against the ruling party. That’s a win-win situation for all.

    • ivan says:
      May 5, 2011 at 2:31 pm

The nine NCMPs are treated as nothing more or less than mere noises in Parliament. Whenever Sylvia Lim spoke, does any PAP MP ever take an interest in her words? This NCMP scheme is nothing different from a disguise to make Singapore look democratic.

  13. Patrick Tan says:

Perhaps compared to other less deserving ministers, George may not have commit mistakes. However, if there is anyone to blame, it is the PAP themselves who created such a imbalance and illogical GRC systems to protect and perpetuate its stranglehold on the electorates. If this is the traditional straight forward fight; one vs one, I might surmise George would be in a better position. Well if he loses, I am sympathetic, but I won’t shed a tear. He is part of the system. In any case no one is indispensable. I also believe Singaporeans are resilient enough to restore or rebuild its economy with or without the PAP. History will prevails.

He still will get his millionaire pay, bonus plus other perks (with his pension*) equivalent or even more depending on org he joins. Similar examples of former PAP ministers and MPs like Lim Chee Onn is a fact. And normal Singaporeans do not get such ready job offerers and lifelong career planning by The HR of PAP as done for it’s ministers & core people.

Regardless of how “key” GY is to the ruling party and perhaps to Singapore as a foreign minister, he is not irreplaceable. To me, the PAP’s intrinsic blunder is the continued pegging of ministerial salary to an obscenely high (by any standards) benchmark which by the way is not an equitable remuneration for the “service” function of a minister/MP. With such a ridiculusly disparate remuneration structure, PAP ministers have lost their moral authority to govern and to serve the people who had elected them into parliament, and to preach to voters during the election campaign. Merits of policies and candidates’ abilities aside, whatever they (PAP candidates) say now can be construed as a determined defence of their “super rice bowl” rather than a genuine attempt to listen to and address the needs of the voters. PAP has indeed lost its direction and its founding principles for which I, a former ardent suppoter, have respected its (old) leaders for. And yes, regardless of their self-praise and eloquent defence of criticisms, I for one do perceive their continued arrogance and self-righteous facade. Perhaps they have been too high up the ivory tower to notice and acknowledge this themselves. They have indeed lost another supporter.

What arrogance? Didn’t you hear that PM Lee himself apologised for mistakes yesterday? Do you call this arrogance? Please get over your own delusional hatred of all things PAP. Regarding George Yeo, do you really think that Singapore can do without him? And that Singapore would be better served with an incompetent MP who can’t even handle his own town council accounts? If he can’t manage one ward properly, how can he handle a GRC with five wards?

BTW, when you say “you have lost another supporter”, do you mean that you usually vote PAP? You must not be swayed by emotions and change your decision this time. Ask yourself, why did you vote PAP in the past? You owe it to yourself, your family and your country to vote for the party that can deliver the best for all. If you vote to advance a selfish partisan opposition agenda, the ship could sink. The value of all our homes will drop, the stock market will crash, and our women could have to go overseas to work as maids. We can’t afford to risk all that. You are apparently a blind supporter of PAP yourself, from your own emotional response. I had merely pointed out that with the rediculously high ministerial salary, they have lost the moral authority to serve – and I am assuming you understand the true meaning of serving the people in a democratic parliament. PM lee “apologized” yesterday? After 2 terms (10 years) or more in his role? And only after repeated feedback from the ground the past few weeks? Isnt that arrogance to apologize only when cornered and at the risk of losing precious votes? You really have been taken in by all the one-sided propaganda that the ship would sink if an opposition gets voted in. Open your eyes and honestly ask yourself if none of the opposition members are as credible or better than the potential PAP candidates. If your mind is not open to possibilities, you and like-minded voters will be the ones dragging down the other citizens. I will simply go back to my main point on ministerial salary – would you condone the “legalized” draining in the millions a month of our hard earned taxpayers’ money for services which could (should) not have cost more than a tenth of that amount?

      @ True Citizen
You complain about the high pay of the ministers. But let me tell you they are already making big sacrifices to serve in government. Shanmugam, Ng Eng Hen, Vivian Balakrishnan earned far more in the private sector. Shanmugam, as head of Allen & Gledhill, easily made $7 to 8m per annum, and now he is taking a 60-75% pay cut. They are doing it because they love Singapore and willing to make sacrifices. But how low can you go? As MM Lee said before, we are not Finland or Denmark. We can’t afford to have a mediocre government. If those countries falter, they go back to a European situation. We on the other hand go back to being in South East Asian situation.. just look around you and tell me what you see.

You got your logic wrong. By the same logic, you should support the civil servants and especially the social workers who earn so little not because they cant earn more had they pursued other career paths but because at least for most of them, it was their calling to serve their fellow citizens. What sacrifice are you talking about if they still earn a lot not doing their previous jobs? And how was it even possible for Singapore to have transformed so quickly and successfully while governed by the old team way before the huge jump in ministerial salaries? And why be so selective in pointing out mediocre economies when there are also success stories like which PAP had tried to emulate but failed? It’s not so much voting for the PAP or any opposition party – the real test of a citizen’s political maturity is the ability to be objectively critical of the choices available and the willingness to make an informed decision. Past successes of any political party earns admiration but current and and potential performances demands the correct exercise of voting power to ensure the right people/team gets elected. As I said, I have no quarrel with the commitment, (real) sacrifices and performance of the old guard. The new team is the issue, considering performance, pay, accountability and exercise of power.

Get your facts right; Vivian Balakrishnan never entered private practice.

Ng Eng Hen might have had a pay cut, but if a doctor earns $5-6 mil a year, you start to wonder whether it’s a “Susan Lim” syndrome. I would like to hear them personally say that taking a $1-2 mil pay cut is a great sacrifice.

Being a politician definitely involves making sacrifices and no one can deny that the opposition candidates have it worse. What is considered ungentlemanly behaviour for most does not seem to apply to the ruling party. They make and break their own rules.

I’d rather vote for a competent person with a heart to serve Singapore. Leaders who get defensive at the first sign of criticism, and do not apologise for larger issues such as housing prices, rising cost of living. inflation, healthcare costs, difficulties with employment, university places going to foreigners. Did they lack foresight that their policies were leading the country in this direction? Are they still saying that these problems were out of their control? What are they planning to do about it?

MBT does not seem to want to reduce HDB prices at all. Are they hoping that our housing prices will rival those of HK? If so, how do they plan to increase salaries accordingly? Will they dip into reserves themselves to increase civil service pay scales and give ministers another pay rise? I don’t seem to hear any answers to these questions.

How about food prices? Rental prices?
        Rising healthcare costs?
Cost of caring for the elderly and disabled?
I could go on and on.

I’ve only received reassurance that these concerns are being “heard” but I don’t see concrete steps being taken to address them. Other than the opposition parties, who have been trying to come up with novel methods to address these issues (whether we agree with them or not), PAP only seems to be spending time saying that all these suggestions do not work. Is this representative of PAP: a party that does not listen to others’ suggestions. Is there no acknowledgment that some of these ideas are worth further debate?

I think a “top down” approach to your citizens no longer works. It might have sufficed in the 1950s but in year 2011, the population is better educated. Just as everyone else has matured and have adopted a consultative approach to leadership, PAP seems to have lagged behind. Maybe we should use some of our tax money to send our leaders for a leadership course.

nani, PAP ministers love the people? Please stop kidding yourself. They only love the fat paycheck. Their salary is definitely not worth their quality. Do I have to mention all the PAP screw-ups, such as the YOG, Mas Selamat escape and Orchard Road floods, of the past five years? Our current ministers are definitely not fit for their jobs. When I look around me, I see many other Asian societies who, despite not paying their ministers million-dollar salaries, manage to rise into global economic powerhouses. Examples of these are Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and S.Korea. The PAP’s policy of paying such fat paychecks to their ministers have turned their ministers into greedy, self serving idiots who over the years became totally out of touch with the ground.

I have a hunch Nani is one of the PAP candidates. From the GCT camp. Maybe even GY himself!

    @Nani

As others have pointed out, the elections are not about GY alone but about the people! What do other countries do when they lose a minister in the elections? They appoint another minister. Simple!

And I don’t see why GY can’t still remain FM if LHL so chooses, even if he loses Aljunied. The way the PAP twists and turns their way around their self-serving policies, surely they can cook up something to keep GY on as FM? That is, IF they, or should I say, if LHL really still wants him to remain as FM.

What you – I mean GY – needs to watch is not the WP Aljunied team but his own team members, especially LHH and CP. These 2 alone can do him in.

Anyway, as your dear MM Lee declared, it’s not the end of the world if PAP loses Aljunied.

All these disparate statements by the PAP’s top guns show that:
    (1) The PAP is running shit scared out of their wits about the Oppo contesting 82 seats.
    (2) There are definitely factions within PAP, and it’s beginning to come out of the woodwork.

Personally, I won’t care if WP loses and GY gets to remain FM, as long as AMK/LHL falls to the Oppo. That would be my wildest dream come true.

MY VOTE IS FOR OPPO. WOO-HOO! WORKERS PARTY IS CONTESTING ALJUNIED!

It’s not really your fault that you can’t compete with the foreigners. Instead of complaining about immigrants, it’s better that you look yourself in the mirror and ask how you can upgrade your skills. In my job, I have to manage a group of about 30. There are foreigners and Singaporeans. At my management level, there are 3 Singaporeans and 4 foreigners. The foreigners are the very cream of the crop coming from overseas. The 3 of us are still able to reach management level. We don’t have to fear competition. Singaporeans can also go to Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge. MG Chan Chun Sing was from a poor family but managed to go to Cambridge, and now managed to become a MP. It shows how meritocratic our system is. Don’t blame the system, blame yourselves. If you upgrade yourself you will be able to reach the top just like many Singaporeans have shown. MG Chan is just one example, there are many more.

His only measure of success is money, exactly the same as the PAP ministers. Mr George yeo has been making millions over the years and we do not have to worry for his future. NOBODY IS INDISPENSIBLE NOT EVEN THE PRIME MINISTER OR THE MM Nani is so obssessed with money success and it all shows in his selfishness and his myopic view of seeing things only at his personal level. This election is about national matters. Policies are wrong and if nothing is done now, we will have 5 more years of damage and suffering. Of course Nani does not understand the suffering of the general population. His thinking and values are EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE PAP TODAT AND THAT EPITOMIZES TODAY’S PROBLEMS because they think they can do no wrong and and nobody is better than them. The Prime Minister is not indispensable? The MM is not indispensable? I think you need a reality check. Mr Lee Hsien Loong is a real talent. He was a top student at Cambridge. Upon graduation from his mathematics course, his professor offered him entry into direct PhD program and also said he would arrange a job for him as an academic. Mr Lee turned down this offer saying that although he loved mathematics, he has to go back to serve his country. The same professor later said “I wish the UK had a PM like Lee Hsien Loong” during the Tony Blair administration. He gave this glowing testimonial when PM Lee was first sworn in. What does that say? That even the British recognise his talents, and consider him to be better than PM Tony Blair. Apart from this, PM Lee also became the youngest Brigadier General in SAF history, and the youngest general in the world (aged 29) since Napoleon. This speaks volumes of his talent and abilities. If he worked in the private sector, he could have become a CEO or Chairman, earning $12-15 million a year. You think he can be so easily replaced? You think you can find us some CEO calibre personnel willing to take on the thankless job of being PM for a mere $3m a year? Singaporeans are getting a bargain, yet they take it for granted.

Can you empathise with those who are the “have-nots”? Yes, even if the WP wins the seat in Aljunied, it does not mean that the foreign minister portfolio goes to them. PAP will have to work harder to put a new foreign minister to be in charge and PAP will also have to work doubly hard to ensure policies are equitable to every citizen not only citizens like you. This way, they will win the heart of Aljunied. Right now, the people of Aljunied have to decide, and probably the people of many other constituencies have to as well.

He also managed to obtain visa-free entry to most countries for Singaporeans. Think about it, you can go to China, UK, EU, US, Middle East countries without the need for a visa. Even nationals of first-world nations such as US and UK do not enjoy such privileges. They need visas for China and Middle East countries, but we Singaporeans can enter any country we wish. Do you think that all this comes easy? George Yeo has been working hard to ensure all of these, thanks to his skill in negotiations with foreign diplomats. You think that Sylvia Lim or Chen Show Mao can handle this with ease?

First, George Yeo learnt his way to become the FM he is today, as can someone else with the same potential. If there isn’t a single person in the PAP government that is capable of taking over that position should the unthinkable happen (MPs are still mortals, lesser or otherwise), then something is intrinsically wrong with our government. The same applies to any other minister. A government with no Plan B to governing is a weak one.

Secondly, even if GY is voted out, he is still in a capacity to serve in other areas, whether as an NMP, or a statboard or government agency. His experience in foreign affairs will prove useful in global deals.

Thirdly, learn to think out of the box and not just squat inside reading and reciting whatever the local media prints. Took me years to finally realise that, but you have the internet now so make good use of it.

I think Nani is a die hard PAP personality. He must be very comfortable with all their policies and does not need an opposition, good luck to him.
We need an opposition, to stop the PAP from passing policies and laws at their own fancy with no debate.
Singaporeans need to know ,want transparency and accountability.

    • Nani says:
      May 3, 2011 at 7:38 am

It’s not called “die hard” but rather it is called gratitude. Something which you do not understand. Let me tell you my father and mother were very poor. They grew up in a 2 room flat on Cantonment Road. Due to the outstanding PAP leadership over the past 50 years, my father became a successful businessman. I was able to go to ACS(I), ACJC, and then go to Columbia University where I obtained a top-notch, world-class degree. Now I am living a good life with my wife and kids in a condo in Grange Road and driving a BMW. My family has a combined income of $25000 a month. You think this is possible without good PAP leadership? It is the system of meritocracy that allows this to happen within just 30-40 years. Dr Ng Eng Hen also grew up in a poor family and then he became a top-notch doctor earning $5-6m a year, but then he took a huge pay cut to become a minister because he wanted to serve Singapore. This is called the spirit of sacrifice. Why should we let the opposition destroy what we worked so hard to build up TOGETHER? Of course, uneducated people like you would not understand, all you know is bitterness and hatred. And you are easily worked up by opposition’s self-serving populist agenda. Instead of complaining and complaning, you should learn to work cheaper, better and faster and upgrading yourself! No wonder MM Lee says Singaporeans need spurs in their side!

I’m not living in condo near Grange Road, but a big bungalow in Andrew Road, I dont drive a BMW, I drive a Bentley …. I think I own more to the hardwork of my parents and the helps of friends.

I’ve a received a good education, and I learned that not all words from a politician can be trusted, like Dr. Ng said he took a huge pay cut, any real proof of his earning of $5-6 M a year or not.

        Ha ha ha ha ….

So, you have made it to the elite level and now want to show off here eh? There is more to life than just earning big bucks and driving flash cars buddy. The PAP of the past was good, but somehow along the way, they lost track of serving the nation and caring for ALL citizens. They lost their moral compass for the sake of high GDP growth. We not only have 1 casino now but 2. TWO CASINOS my fellow Singaporean! Why do we need TWO casinos for such tiny island???
You mentioned meritocracy….ACS, ACJC, aren’t those elite schools where normal working class folks find it almost impossible to enter due to financial constraints or no “connections”? You mentioned your father became a successful business man…does he pay a fair wage to our fellow Singaporeans? How many of his fellow Singaporeans does he employ? Or he prefers FT to raise his profit margin due to GREED? It is precisely people like you that will turn our beloved Singapore into a selfish and ungracious society. Stop showing off, be humble and start living life the correct way. I pity your children….. Residents of Aljunied, vote without fear.

Since you are so highly educated, I trust that you know who said this. The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. This is exactly the problem of this government as it has its priorities all wrong, forever looking at being Numero Uno.

Now @Nani you are an elite now huh? Combine $25k per month income. Asking peasants to work cheaper, faster, better? You subscribe to opposition wrecking what PAP has built up over 30-40 years, and shatter your iron rice bowl? What makes you think oppositions are not Singaporeans? You have a heart, and they don’t? You are highly qualified and earn a good living, but of course, having achieve so much, all you care is to protect yourself. How dare even you say “cheaper, better, faster”? Voting in some opposition will not compromise your good life. It will be same, or even better. Then Nani can become Nanu, replace the “i” with “you”. Yes, think of others (less well-off) too, not just yourself.

No offence, but I would have thought someone who graduated from Columbia University would think more critically than a junior college kid grappling with his or her GP essay.

Speaking of gratitude, that should lie with PAP leaders who walked with their people and helped turned Singapore into a miracle–without asking for million of dollars in return or else they become corrupted. they are the same leaders who worked towards nationhood, and not flood the country with foreigners on the pretext of attracting “foreign talent”. I mean, half Singapore’s 5mil population are now foreigners, and you expect me to believe they are all better than local talents?

Funny that you harp on this notion of TOGETHERNESS when this massive import of people from China etc is tearing our national identity apart.

Interesting analysis. If George Yeo loses, and GCT wins Marine Parade by a slender margin, this could be his last term. Meaning that LHL could consolidate his power in the cabinet ahead of LKY’s impending passing. It is known that GCT and LHL don’t see eye-to-eye and many observers have said that GCT will try to get his own people to takeover once LKY is gone. Haven’t you noticed that GCT seems stressed during this election, uttering all kinds of nonsense? This is unlike him. He is stressed because his close ally GY might be out of a job. And LHL “fixed” him by sending him Tin Pei Ling who is a poison chalice.

Trying to insinuate that I am a disgrace to ACS? You are the one who is a disgrace to ACS. I have made it in life and I am enjoying the fruits of hard work made possible by our meritocratic society which was built by the PAP. If you are complaining about this and that, you are probably a failure in your career and that means you are a disgrace to ACS. You were probably not even from ACS(I) but ACS Barker. “The best is yet to be” applies to mediocre fools like you who are just hoping for better days. For me, the best is already here. In the true spirit of excellence that is espoused in our glorious anthem, I am the one who has managed to lead a life that is truly “planting a beacon of truth and light on this island of the main”, along with other successful alumni like Dr Ng Eng Hen.

And that you are proud? Even in your own school you feel a sense of up, and the rest are down? Incredulous! I did not tell you how much I earned and what car I drove does not mean I am beneath you, mate. I should say we are equal but then again this is not about who is winning. I am from ACS where there were no (I) and Barker Road yet, so what? You just flame me just because I say you are an ACSian and not all are like you? You feel I am insinuating you are a disgrace? Guilt-stricken or what? Ng Eng Hen, a walkover MP and you feel proud? Chiam See Tong fought every elections and who is a true warrior? I feel good for you that you are doing well, but look around you (not around Grange Road) but at the lower 20% of Singaporeans and see how you can help. It is not just how much you earn and what car you drive. And you don’t have to desecrate the school motto to drive your point.

This election isn’t about George Yeo. It is about the people’s desire to have a quality check and balance in Parliament. The quality of the WP’s Aljunied team is unprecedented. The people know that the PAP has failed them in the last 5 years. It’s not about George Yeo personally, but the PAP in general. Pritam Singh said it in a rally. He said George Yeo was a good man but he was in the wrong political party.

So you are saying that George Yeo is just “collateral damage” and that WP is likened to a terrorist organization carrying out a “bombing”? This is the mentality of opposition supporters. You are just out to destabilise Singapore in order to further your own selfish agenda of power. George Yeo is a decent man and a very capable minister. Singapore cannot function without him. Even SM Goh admitted that he can’t easily be replaced. Do you think it is so easy to find someone who can be Foreign Minister with years of experience negotiating FTAs? And you are saying he should be sacked, for what? For doing a good job? The opposition likened this to killing a tiger. Killing tigers for their own selfish reasons like “medicinal purposes” and most importantly their own ego. So they can go around saying they killed a tiger. In the meantime, do you think it is very easy to replace a tiger? They are very rare and they are important in the ecosystem being apex predators. You take them out and the whole ecosystem crumbles!

The PAP have messed up this country badly with their screwed up immigration, healthcare, population and housing policies. No doubt they contributed to the country’s growth. Politician cannot be trusted. This was how it was implanted in my brain every since young from the generations before me when my forefather migrated from China. Just reflect on the history of the world. Who are the people in power wanted to relinquish their power easily? While now I have a chance to vote I will make sure that the one in control has to be checked because it is getting to the stage of absolute power in the hands of the few who have (PAP) abuse their power on those who have not (non PAP). Are you going to pursue your selfish agenda of voting in the WP just so that they can achieve their goal of taking over the government? As Shanmugam has said, do you really think WP’s intention is just to be an insurance policy? Obviously, WP has a hidden sinister motive of one day becoming the government. And is it fair for all Singaporeans to lose a rare talent like George Yeo just because of these selfish, sinister motives?
