THE SATAY CLUB
Before the construction of the Theatres on the Bay, the Esplanade site was the home to the Satay Club, an open-air hawker centre housing dozens of stalls, all of them selling satay – Singapore’s favourite snack.
People from all walks of life would gather at the onset of dusk to enjoy the delightfully tasty meat skewers along with one another’s company. It didn’t matter if you were a lawyer, merchant, secretary or taxi driver – the Satay Club was a place for everyone.
The Satay Club was also a place for people to gather and have conversations about just about everything under the sun.
People chatted about current affairs and shared the latest gossip over sizzling skewers of meat. Debates were held on various topics ranging from politics to football against the backdrop of the sweet, smoky aroma that emanated from the satay grills.
Though attempts were made to resurrect the Satay Club, its later incarnations failed to recapture the essence of the iconic venue.
As such, we have brought back the spirit of the Satay Club and taken it online – thesatayclub.net is the interactive website for chatter on all things Singaporean. You can now keep up with the latest news right here on the internet.
